Talking about bird guns you need to also talk about the dog's. I've got a 10yr old English Setter and lost one in January. Also have a Red Setter, best kept secret in the bird dog world. Stormy will be 4 in October. I'd just noticed the little camera down in the corner. Love posting photo's of my dog's!
This is Stormy.

Hey Don - I have zero experience of hunting over dogs despite the fact that I used to do a lot of spurfowl, francolin, guineafowl and pigeon shooting. My folks (Afrikaner) do not hunt over dogs but the British descendents surely do out here.
You have just been appointed as pointing dog editor! I have a huge vacuum that needs to be filled in this category. I shall just post some photos of some shoots.
Beautiful dog and a very good photo too. Keep on sending them in!
I've got quite a few dog photo's. Here's another.
This was my Bodie. Lost him Jan 11 this year. I hate losing a dog, tear's me up!
I know nothing about pointers but that looks good. Do they use eye sight or their noses to locate a bird?
Can use both but generally nose. I put my Bodie on a pigeon walking around just to take a photo of it several years ago. Well trained the dog should stop to scent or sight.
Wonder what a dog like that will do when you hunt the mass of pigeons that flock onto the sunflower fields we hunt
this time of the year.
Ha! I'd hate to have to be the one to clean all those! I don't think many Americans hunt pigeon's any more.
Popular with visiting big game hunters here. Those normally go to the farm hands and their families. There is no bag limit and rock pigeon numbers have been increasing over time. Depending on the size of the sunflower field 4-8 guns are posted around it. These things fly fast and low and it takes a while to get the knack. A slightly Malay curried stew made in a big pot with 20 of them is worth all the cleaning :-)
Very nice dogs! I too dearly love upland bird hunting with my dog, a German Wirehaired Pointer. Mostly we go for chukar with occasional trips for grouse or pheasant here in Washington State.
Regards, Guy
Oh, man, I often miss the snow of Colorado - an ancient sense of calmness envelops the soul.
Thanks for the photos, Guy - I have never hunted game birds over dogs - it is mostly done here by the British descendents; my folks like to just walk up and shoot as the bird flush.
When visitors go after rock pigeon every gun easliy burns 400 shells in a day.
